In this week’s Torah portion, Beshalach, we find the Israelites standing at the edge of the sea, caught between a pursuing army and the daunting unknown of the deep. It is a moment defined by the transition from the "narrow place" of Egypt to the vast responsibility of communal freedom. Much like our ancestors, the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts is currently navigating a season of profound transition as we move forward with a steady hand to meet the challenges of our own time.
Our advocacy work has never been more vital. As we confront the rising tide of antisemitism, we are not merely reacting; we are proactively fortifying our community’s place in the civic square. This includes standing firm against the divisive "Apartheid-Free Community" pledges that seek to isolate Israel and alienate our neighbors. We refuse to let our community be defined by those who wish to exclude us, choosing instead to lead with education, resilience, and truth.
Just as the Pillar of Cloud protected the Israelites on their march, the Federation remains committed to the physical safety of our people. Through our comprehensive security initiatives led by Andrew Hoffman, we continue to provide professional oversight, training, and resources to all our local institutions. We believe that a vibrant Jewish life can only flourish when our synagogues, schools, and centers are secure.
Finally, we are currently in the midst of our Allocations initiative from last year’s Community Campaign. It is a diverse committee with members from throughout the region-young and old, congregation and non-synagogue members, experienced and ‘first-timers.’ The distribution of these funds through a rigorous Allocations process ensures that your generosity is transformed into impact. By vetting needs and prioritizing communal health, we ensure that every dollar strengthens the fabric of Western Massachusetts, from social services to Jewish education.
In Beshalach, the sea did not split until Nachshon took the first step into the water. Today, your support and involvement is that first step. We are moving from strength to strength, ensuring that our community does not just survive the crossing, but thrives on the other side.
