Our collective strength takes on a timeless resonance.

Dear Friend,

In the wake of the recent tragedy at Bondi Beach, Australia, a heavy shroud of sorrow has settled over the shores of Sydney. To see a place synonymous with sunlight and vitality transformed into a scene of such senseless violence is a profound shock to the soul. Yet, even as we mourn the Jewish lives stolen and the peace disrupted, we witness an extraordinary counter-force: an unyielding resilience that transcends borders.

This spirit was tangibly present last night at the LYA Chanukiah lighting in Longmeadow (and many other gatherings around our region), where nearly 300 people gathered in a powerful display of solidarity. It was especially poignant to see our Christian neighbors from four different local churches come forward to stand tall alongside us. Town Selectmen, the Police Chief, and Fire Chief were all there. In an era often marked by division, their presence served as a living shield against hatred, proving that when one part of our human family suffers, we all stand together.

As we enter the last three nights of Chanukah, this collective strength takes on a timeless resonance.

The Chanukah holiday is a testament to the survival of spirit against overwhelming odds. Each night, as the flames on the Menorah grow in number, we are reminded that even a small flicker can pierce the deepest gloom. By adding light to the darkness—through the ancient ritual of the candles we signal that we will not be bowed.

We stand up to hatred by choosing hope,
We choose the the warmth of our shared humanity over the cold shadow of grief.

Shabbat Shalom v Chanukah Sameach,
