Our collective strength is our greatest asset.

Dear Friend,

To the diverse and vibrant Jewish community of Western Massachusetts, this is a call to strategic unity.

We were at a meeting yesterday at the Grinspoon Foundation of all the synagogues and agencies in Western Massachusetts, Vermont, and Eastern New York. You can imagine, it was a packed room, and for 30 minutes we went around the table introducing ourselves, our organizations, and how the Grinspoon Foundation had enhanced our communities. And while each organization was unique, they were, in many ways, the same.

Our strength has always rested in our rich array of synagogues, agencies, and cultural organizations, yet, in an evolving landscape, the future demands a collaborative spirit focused on greater efficiency and communal resourcefulness.

The path forward lies in eliminating redundant efforts and maximizing our collective impact. By embracing greater organizational efficiencies—such as shared administrative services, joint programming, or pooled purchasing—we can realize significant cost savings. This conserved capital is not merely a number on a ledger; it represents vital funds that can be redirected to core services: supporting our elders, enriching Jewish education, advocating for Israel, and combating antisemitism. PJ Library is one great example of working together. The Grinspoon Foundation provides the books, organization, and collateral material….each individual synagogue/agency does their own programs in a way that works for them. Our Security program is another example  where the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts provides the framework, the training, assessment, and the expertise, and each organization applies it to their situation in a unique and individual way, with a common goal of making our community secure.

Crucially, working together is the most effective way to engage more people. A fragmented community often leaves individuals feeling disconnected. Coordinated outreach and streamlined, high-quality programs will break down institutional silos, making Jewish life more accessible, meaningful, and attractive to young families, unaffiliated Jews, and new residents across the Pioneer Valley. A unified voice is also a louder voice, ensuring our community's needs are heard by local and state political leaders.

Let us move beyond isolated efforts. By collaborating, we honor the core Jewish value of Klal Yisrael—the responsibility of every Jew for all Jews—and build a future for Western Massachusetts Jewry that is more resilient, more impactful, and built on the rock-solid foundation of shared purpose.

Our collective strength is our greatest asset.

Shabbat Shalom
