May the warmth of the Chanukah lights...

24 Kislev 5786

Dear Friend,

Beginning tonight, Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, commemorates an ancient story that resonates profoundly in the modern world. It marks the victory of the Maccabees—a small band of Jewish fighters—against a powerful empire that sought to extinguish their religious freedom. More than a tale of military triumph, it is a celebration of Jewish resilience, dedication, and the refusal to let one's identity be suppressed.

The core miracle—a single flask of oil, enough for one day, lasting for eight—is a timeless lesson in hope. It reminds us that even the smallest spark of light or act of goodness has the power to dispel immense darkness. This theme of bringing light from the darkness is especially crucial in today’s complex times, urging us to choose courage over despair, and faith over cynicism.

Across Western Massachusetts (and around the world), our Jewish community embraces this opportunity to gather and affirm these values publicly. Our synagogues, JCC, and public squares are hosting numerous events, from Menorah lightings to festive parties, gelt drop to ice skating. These gatherings—often featuring latkes and music—are vital for reinforcing communal bonds and boldly showcasing the light of Jewish continuity for all the world to see.

As we light the Chanukiah this year, let the increasing glow remind us of our collective power to illuminate the world, one candle, one act of kindness, at a time.
